Bicycle Tour Along the Farmington Canal Trail

Bicycle Tour Along the Farmington Canal Trail:

Saturday, November 9     9:30 am- 12:30 pm

Sponsored by the New Haven Bioregional Group.

Meet at First Unitarian Universalist Society,

608 Whitney Avenue, New Haven

Saturday, November 9, 9:30 AM

In case of rain, we will reschedule for another date.

This fun and easy bicycle tour will explore how New Haven's industrial and economic history is tied to its environmental history. As we ride along the historic Farmington Canal Greenway, we will learn how the Canal has been transformed over two centuries from an economic and industrial corridor into a popular multi-use trail.

We will visit the old Winchester factory complex to see how it has been transformed into Science Park, an outpost of the 21st century economy. Old factory buildings are being converted to  office space for biotech and financial services companies like Higher One, and a new $60 million residential development called Winchester Lofts that has just broken ground.

As we pass through Newhallville, we will learn about some promising neighborhood revitalization efforts spearheaded by groups like Neighborhood Housing Services. We will make a stop in the Newhall neighborhood of Hamden, where an entire neighborhood was built on a toxic waste dump serving New Haven's factories. In the last decade Newhall has become the site of the largest environmental remediation project in Connecticut's history, exposing fault-lines of race and class and highlighting the environmental injustice that continues to plague Connecticut's post-industrial cities.

Our final stop will be at Urban Miners in Hamden, where local entrepreneur Joe DeRisi is creating green jobs by recycling and selling used building materials.  Meet at FUUS at 9:30 am with your bike for a prompt departure.  There is plenty of off-street parking.

We will return to FUUS around 12:30 pm. The ride is approximately 8 miles, mostly flat. Some refreshments will be available at Urban Miners, but feel free to bring your own lunch.
